Mt. Ontake stands at a remarkable 3,067m. It towers above the nearby peaks, even among the deep mountains of the Kiso area. Mt. Ontake, which is sometimes regarded as one of the Three Holy Mountains of Japan, has a long and sacred history of mountain worshipping. The mountain’s worship dates back to the 8th century. Worshippers even created a religious sect called, Ontake-kyo. Until the late 18th century, climbing the mountain was strictly regulated. Only those who had completed a grueling 75 or even 100 days of spiritual cleansing and ritual could summit the mountain. During this time there was to be no alcohol consumption and a fully vegetarian Buddhist diet was to be followed.
Alongside this, there were several rituals to cleanse the body and mind. One of these rituals was called takigyo, the act of meditating under a cold waterfall.

In the late 1700s, the mountain opened to the general public. Since then, Mt. Ontake has attracted worshippers from all over Japan. Much like Mt. Fuji, many worshippers still visit the mountain today. On this tour, you will follow the ancient pilgrimage mountain paths of Mt. Onake, called the Ontake Kodo with a local guide. You’ll cycle on E-bikes and hike through moss mysterious covered paths to see ancient mountain shrines and sacred relics. At Kiyotaki Waterfall you will take part in a real takigyo

Enjoy this authentic, action-packed, multi-activity guided tour of Mt. Ontake.
