Today’s highlight Ice walk on Lake Shikotsu starts on your 2nd day! Lake Shikotsu freezes every winter due to the very cold weather. Walk on the frozen lake in a dry suit to stay warm and dry, and explore the “Lake Shikotsu Blue” water from above. This activity takes approximately 1.5hrs. 

After walking on the frozen lake, transfer to Sapporo by private transfer and visit the Sapporo Olympic Museum which is located at the base of the Okurayama Ski Jump Stadium and you can see the highly built ski jump facilities in front of the museum.

The tour begins at the iconic Odori Park on the way to the Hokkaido Shrine Tongu. The shrine has strong ties to the local community and is also well-known for its spiritual aura. After that we head to the 100-year-old Nijo Fish Market for a breakfast of fresh seafood over rice.

After enjoying Sapporo, transfer to Asahikawa by 2 hrs ride. Your first activity in Asahikaw is making “Furoshiki”. You can choose your own design from several samples and the local staff will teach you how to work on it.

Afterwards transfer to the Otokoyama sake park which is a facility near the Otokoyama Sake Brewery in Asahikawa. Learn about sake brewing history and enjoy views of the Daisetsuzan mountains while tasting the local sakes here!

After having lunch in Souunkyo, transfer to Kitami and visit the red fox farm. Red foxes are subspecies native to Hokkaido—roaming freely in a semi-natural environment. 

After having fun with red foxes, transfer to Abashiri where you will stay tonight.

Experiencing drift ice kayaking is a great fun adventure activity where you can paddle on a kayak to navigate through the frozen drift ice on the Sea of Okhotsk. You will be provided with dry suits and guided through the unique winter seascape, which is only possible during the winter months, typically from mid-January to late March. The tour takes 2.5hrs. 

After having lunch, visit the drift ice museum and learn how drift ice makes this area’s ecosystem so unique and diverse. 

After learning about drift ice, enjoy drift ice sightseeing cruises. An icebreaker ship sails through the Sea of Okhotsk to break through the large frozen mass of drift ice. You may also spot wildlife like seals and Steller’s sea eagles. The cruise takes about 1 hour.

After cruising, transfer to Lake Akan and relax at Onsen.
