- Discover the natural beauty of Tokyo on a hike up Mount Takao
- Soak in relaxing natural hot spring baths
- Dine on a meal prepared on a sunken hearth at a restaurant housed inside a traditional-style thatched roof building
Mount Takao is located in the eastern pocket of Tokyo Prefecture. The 599 meter tall mountain attracts visitors and hikers year round due to its proximity to central Tokyo. Historically, it attracted practitioners of shugendo, a mystic form of religion revering Japan’s sacred mountains. Due to its closeness to central Tokyo (approximately 50 km) and reliable transportation, many people make the trip from Tokyo to the Michelin guide “three-star mountain” to enjoy its national park and walk its wonderful trails. The observation area commands stunning views of the Kanto plains and the skyscrapers of Japan’s capital.
We hike up using trail number six, which winds through lush forests and requires good hiking boots. During the climb we will stop to eat a bento box lunch and, once we reach the top, there is the possibility to take a short rest or walk around the summit. The descending trail is easier and includes a visit to Yakuo-in Temple. Once we are back in Takaosanguchi, we have a short time for shopping and coffee break before going to Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu. (Note: unfortunately, this onsen does not accept customers with tattoos. In the case that you might be affected by this, there is an option to visit a Trick Art Museum instead).
After relaxing in hot spring baths, a bus takes us to Ukai Toriyama restaurant. Luxurious charcoal-grilled chicken dishes are served in a traditional thatched roof house representative of Japanese sukiya-zukuri architecture. There is also a large beautiful Japanese-style garden surrounding the restaurant.
Finally, the group will return by train to Shinjuku, the end point of the tour.
Mt. Takao Hike with Onsen & Luxurious Dinner begins at Shinjuku Station. Participants will gather at the South Exit before boarding a train to Takaosanguchi Station.
From Takaosanguchi, the tour will then head to Mount Takao and hike its 599 meter-high summit, stopping in between and enjoying a bento box lunch. Descending, we visit Yakuo-in Temple which is on the way. Upon returning to the base of Mount Takao, participants can enjoy relaxing baths in Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuy. The last experience is dinner of charcoal grilled-chicken at the restaurant, Ukai Toriyama. After dinner, tour members will return to Shinjuku Station, where the tour will conclude upon arrival.
