Story

Experience an amazing journey to the past of Hakodate, from the Jomon era onwards. At Mt. Hakodate, feel the history of modern Hakodate since the Edo period until now. At the Hakodate City Museum of Northern Peoples, discover the lifestyle and world view of the Ainu people. Reach way back to the days of the Jomon at two archeological world heritage sites with a 10,000 year history where the roots of modern Japan can be found. Here you can explore the unique lifestyle and spirituality of these ancient people.

Each of these sites will have knowledgeable local experts who will help you retrace the origins of Hakodate, the charm of the Ainu culture, and the significance and influence of Jomon culture
(via English interpreter). A highlight is canoeing the Shiodomari River where Jomon archeological finds are numerous along its banks. This is the area where many footprints and handprints of infants and children, displayed at the Kakinoshima Heritage Site, were preserved in clay.

While slowly canoeing down the river, which is thought to have been essential to local Jomon culture as a water and food source, ponder the life of the Jomon people who lived in harmony with nature in those ancient times. At night, enjoy fresh local food, relax at your hotel and enjoy the amazing hot spring located on the top floor.

Highlight

・Explore the Shiodomari River, where many Jomon ruins were found. Increase your understanding of the life of the Jomon people in Hakodate by following a guide, familiar with Hakodate’s nature, rivers and canoeing.

・Take a guided tour at two Jomon UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites with a Jomon expert who will take you deep into the Jomon world. What made the Jomon settle here and what prompted their artistic expressions?
