Story
Shimazu, Kumanogawa-cho, is an enclave of Shingu located about 30 km north of the city center. The area has a special connection to the history of Shingu’s prosperity, as trees cut down from the mountains were once carried on rafts from Shimazu down the Kumano River to the city center. Explore the same path the raftmen’s used to take with a local guide. While strolling along the moss-covered Raftmen’s Path, let your mind drift back to the days when the raftsmen used to pass through, breathing this same clean forest air. After, take a tour of beautiful Doro-kyo Gorge, located just up the Kumano River, on a boat with a traditional Japanese style.
