Sacred Sites of Kii Peninsula
– 6 Day Kumano Kodo Iseji Pilgrimage –
Heartland Japan has just released a unique new hiking tour for fixed dates in November. Part of our Sacred Sites of Kii Peninsula series, we are offering an itinerary that puts travelers firmly in the shoes of spiritual pilgrims from days of old.
DATES
November 5th, 2024 – November 10th, 2024
(6 days, 5 nights)
About the Tour
The tour starts in Nagoya, and ends in Osaka, but almost all of the trip will be spent in the southern part of the Kii Peninsula trekking along the Iseji route of the Kumano Kodo. Guests will hike through pristine forests to ancient Shinto and Buddhist sites along the old pilgrimage trails, part of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range UNESCO World Heritage Site. What’s more, intimate, first-hand encounters with local traditions, artistry, and other intangible cultural treasures await at every stop along the way.
A Journey Inside Yourself Kumano Kodo Iseji Pilgrimage -Best Hiking Trail in Japan
Iseji Route
The particular route we operate in is called the Iseji route, and was mostly used by common folk from Edo (Tokyo) on pilgrimages to the Grand Shrine of Ise who then extended their journey further to the Kumano Sanzan in the Kii Mountains. Other ancient pilgrimage routes, especially Nakahechi, have recently started suffering from overdevelopment and overtourism. Meanwhile, Iseji has remained relatively untouched, despite its natural beauty. This not only provides an opportunity for some spectacular hiking, but also for genuine tranquility and spiritual reflection, creating a unique and transformative journey that is impossible to imitate–perfect for anyone who wants to get away from the crowd and see the real Japan, or just needs mental and spiritual rejuvenation.
