To tourists considering travel to Kamikatsu

Kamikatsu is a small town with a population of under 1500. In 2013, the town made ” The Zero Waste Declaration” with aim of producing no garbage. Heartland Japan introduces this trip to Kamikatsu and numerous “Kamikatsu A-ha! Experiences”, exclusively to responsible travelers with a mind to “experience Kamikatsu as it is and to learn about and enjoy the town through the trip.

“Kamikatsu Awa Bancha Tea” is tea fermented with lactic acid which is rare even in a global context. The golden-colored tea with a peculiar scent and fresh acidic flavor has been passed down for generations in Kamikatsu as their regular house tea. Its production method is unique, and almost all the work, from picking tea leaves to packing, is done by hand. The flavor and taste differ depending on the year and people, thus a wide variety of teas are produced. This precious tea-making method was also designated as National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Despite facing a shortage of successors, Shinobu and others involved in the tea production have been working on preserving and popularizing Kamikatsu Awa Bancha Tea in order to pass down this tradition to future generations.

► Experience drinking and comparing Kamikatsu Awa Bancha Tea, produced by fermenting lactic acid, something rare even on a global scale.

► Through the tea drunk in daily life in Kamikatsu, guests get in touch with Kamikatsu’s culture and lifestyle.

► With Shinobu’s selection, taste precious Awa Bancha Tea, which is not distributed in the general market.
