Overview

The history of the Akama inkstone is said to date back 920 years. During the period when the Mori clan ruled the domain, entry to the mountains where Akama stone, the raw material for inkstones, was mined was strictly controlled, and when an inkstone was needed as a gift for a daimyo’s visit to Japan, the lord of the domain ordered that it be mined.

Today, inkstones are known as one of Yamaguchi Prefecture’s representative crafts, and have been selected as a Tokyo 2020 commemorative item. The Akama inkstone is made in five stages: quarrying, rimming, shaving, carving, and polishing. The finished inkstone can be used not only as a tool for calligraphy, but also as a paperweight or accessory stand for a long time.
