  • Outdoor cooking: Participants will cut bamboo and make utensils, then cook rice over a campfire.
  • Lecture on local herbs by staff from the “Kodaisan Medicinal Herbs Society.”

  • Foster community connections by working alongside locals and sharing a meal.

Enjoy a communal meal featuring “kappo rice” cooked with fresh bamboo and Kumamoto’s local dishes. Discover the flavors of herbs gathered from the vicinity of Mt. Kodai, which are prepared as tea and incorporated into the cuisine. This program provides an opportunity to learn about traditional Japanese lifestyle wisdom while dining together.

Recommended Points

Bamboo has a strong tendency to spread, and if left untouched, it can turn into a dark and damp bamboo grove. To maintain bamboo groves in a visually appealing and bright condition, it’s necessary to cut and use the bamboo. However, in modern life, the use of bamboo has diminished, leading to neglected bamboo groves. Cooking “kappo rice” plays a role in revitalizing these bamboo groves. Additionally, Mt. Kodai is known to host around 150 varieties of wild herbs. The “Mt. Kodai Herb Association” is dedicated to preserving traditional wisdom related to herbal usage in cooking and health maintenance.
