Overview

Nestled on the slopes and in the valleys, terraced rice fields, known as tanada, are created like steps on the mountain’s incline. Often referred to as Senmaida (a thousand rice paddies, even though the actual count may reach into the thousands), this scenery evokes a sense of nostalgia for visitors as it represents one of Japan’s original landscapes.

Terraced fields constitute a mere 8 percent of all rice paddies in Japan. Despite their historical significance, they face a decline due to factors such as reduced rice consumption, policy changes, and an aging farming population.

In the town of Tsuno, Kochi Prefecture, the Kainokawa Tanada Preservation Society is dedicated to preserving and passing on this precious landscape. Join an interactive experience with the preservation society members, gaining insights into their dedication to preserving and inheriting the history of these terraced fields.
